Facing a Giant with Our Own AI: Authentic Intelligence (English and Spanish)

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about David in the Old Testament stories. He was the youngest of the eight sons of Jesse, and he was often sent to tend the sheep, far from the hub of activity and belonging in the family. He was seen as small and insignificant. When his older brothers were at the frontline of a major national battle, David was sent to them, not as a warrior but as a delivery boy. Perhaps his upbringing didn’t inherently teach him that he was a powerful individual with the strength and capacity to influence and even lead a nation. But God still knew who David really was.

At the battlefront where David suddenly found himself, the Philistines were threatening the Israelites with a giant of a man, Goliath. The crux of the war would depend on who could face this indomitable warrior. Issues of power and authority and freedom for generations were hanging in the balance. And the Israelite army was frozen in fear.

There are many ways I see parallels with how AI (Artificial Intelligence) is our modern day Goliath. The difference is that our Goliath is growing more powerful every day the more it is being fed by our data and questions.

Don’t get me wrong. I believe wholeheartedly that there are many ingenious functions of AI that are a blessing to each of us individually and collectively. I am the beneficiary of AI as a powerful tool nearly every day.

But what happens when the tool becomes the master?

In a recent training for Big Ocean Women entitled “Artificial Intelligence and Algorithmic Governance,” founding director Carolina Allen explained the transformational trajectory of AI. In its initial status as ANI, or Artificial Narrow Intelligence, AI executed narrow, specific user-directed tasks with fixed boundaries. However, the more it is being used and aggregating the data and connections, it is morphing into AGI, or Artificial General Intelligence. Carolina explains,

This AGI will be able to think, to learn, and to adapt like a human across many different tasks, not just one narrow job. Most of AI today is like a very skilled tool, and AGI is more like a general problem solver. It’s like it has a brain, and it’s learning, and it’s changing and growing and developing….It would be able to learn new tasks without being reprogrammed. It would apply knowledge from one area to another. It would be able to reason, plan, and make judgments when a situation is unfamiliar or new. It’s able to improve itself through experience.

While that may sound helpful and even exciting in its possibilities, we are introducing a complicated issue of authority and governance which becomes strikingly clear as we see the projected transformation of AI into ASI, or Artificial Super Intelligence. Carolina further explains,

It’s an AI that would surpass human intelligence in every domain. Not just in speed or memory, but also in creativity, in reasoning, in learning, in social understanding, and in strategic wisdom. Which is hard to even fathom.

Again, that may sound helpful and even exciting in its possibilities. Goliath is awesome, as long as he is on your side.

We’re moving into machine authority, which is replacing our own authority, and we’re acquiescing our judgment and authority to these machines….It would eventually replace or at the very least, significantly reshape many forms of human decision-making. And like we talked about, that human authority is being diminished. So, it would concentrate power into whoever controls the system.

The once powerful tool has the ability now to be an omnipotent taskmaster.

As Carolina continued to educate us, I felt smaller and smaller as I saw the reality of how AI is getting bigger and bigger. I saw how it permeates data systems and governance policy all around the world. It would be easy to freeze in fear, just like the Israelite army.

But then there was David and his five small stones.

My David moment came as a glimmer of insight to my mind, which spread to my whole soul. I wrote in the online class chat,

I believe that it is in our power to create our own “AI,” which is AUTHENTIC INTELLIGENCE rather than artificial intelligence. The adversary is warping a true principle and making it artificial. The principle is that the collective is powerful. Just like data is being contributed to Chat GPT that makes it smarter and more powerful, we are doing the same thing as we join today and talk and share and learn and grow together. This is AUTHENTIC INTELLIGENCE we are nurturing today!

I could see how my small involvement in attending the meetings, serving as a secretary for a committee, writing articles for the blog and newsletter, organizing funding and support for a young woman in the Gambia to get an education and start a business, and teaching true principles to my own family are my five small stones. 

A small shepherd boy faced that mighty giant with something so common and simple that the mighty army never would have considered it. Stones. Small, smooth stones collected from Mother Earth. That’s what defeated Goliath and liberated the Israelite nation from impending captivity.

Five small smooth stones.

Just like our 12 simple tenets of truth.

Each month we, as Big Ocean Women, gather in person and virtually as WAVES all around the world to discuss our monthly tenets. We gather these small stones into our hearts, practice using our slings by sharing our stories, and grow in confidence by strengthening our friendships and uniting our voices. This is authentic power. This is real AI, “Authentic Intelligence” of the soulful variety, not artificial intelligence of the digital variety.

We each have the power to gather and unite in authentic ways and use our own light and gifts to bring about much good in our families, communities, and nations. As Carolina encourages,

I want each of you to start practicing how to reframe the heaviness of what you’re learning with the thoughts and impressions that you’re being given right now, by the Holy Ghost and by your internal compass. These impressions are always directing towards simple solutions that are always there. I want you to start thinking, “Well, what now? What does that mean, Heavenly Father?” So start practicing. That’s the reframing process that I really want us to become proficient in. Start practicing what it feels like to discover God’s simple applications and simple solutions.

Those are inspiring words. We may each feel like David, just one small drop of water. But together we form mighty waves of power and influence, and that Authentic Intelligence has the capacity to create powerful impact.

Es una IA que superaría la inteligencia humana en todos los ámbitos. No solo en velocidad o memoria, sino también en creatividad, razonamiento, aprendizaje, comprensión social y sabiduría estratégica. Lo cual es difícil incluso de imaginar.

Una vez más, eso puede sonar útil y emocionante por sus posibilidades. Goliat es impresionante, siempre y cuando esté de tu lado.

Nos estamos moviendo hacia una autoridad de las máquinas, que está reemplazando nuestra propia autoridad, y estamos cediendo nuestro juicio y autoridad a estas máquinas… Eventualmente reemplazaría o, al menos, remodelaría de manera significativa muchas formas de toma de decisiones humanas. Y como mencionamos, esa autoridad humana está disminuyendo. Así que concentraría el poder en quien controle el sistema.

La herramienta que antes era poderosa ahora tiene la capacidad de convertirse en un amo omnipotente.

Mientras Carolina continuaba enseñándonos, yo me sentía cada vez más pequeña al ver la realidad de cómo la IA se está volviendo cada vez más grande. Vi cómo permea los sistemas de datos y las políticas de gobernanza en todo el mundo. Sería fácil quedarse paralizada por el miedo, igual que el ejército israelita.

Pero entonces estaba David y sus cinco pequeñas piedras.

Mi momento “David” llegó como un destello de inspiración en mi mente, que se extendió por toda mi alma. Escribí en el chat de la clase en línea:

Creo que está en nuestro poder crear nuestra propia “IA”, que es INTELIGENCIA AUTÉNTICA en lugar de inteligencia artificial. El adversario está distorsionando un principio verdadero y haciéndolo artificial. El principio es que lo colectivo es poderoso. Así como los datos que se aportan a ChatGPT lo hacen más inteligente y más poderoso, estamos haciendo lo mismo al unirnos hoy, hablar, compartir, aprender y crecer juntas. ¡Esta es la INTELIGENCIA AUTÉNTICA que estamos cultivando hoy!

Pude ver cómo mi pequeña participación —asistir a las reuniones, servir como secretaria de un comité, escribir artículos para el blog y el boletín, organizar fondos y apoyo para que una joven en Gambia pudiera recibir educación y comenzar un negocio, y enseñar principios verdaderos a mi propia familia— eran mis cinco pequeñas piedras.

Un joven pastor se enfrentó a ese poderoso Gigante con algo tan común y simple que el ejército jamás lo habría considerado. Piedras. Piedras pequeñas y lisas recogidas de la Madre Tierra. Eso fue lo que derrotó a Goliat y liberó a la nación de Israel de la inminente cautividad.

Cinco pequeñas piedras lisas.

Igual que nuestros 12 sencillos principios de verdad.

Cada mes, nosotras, como Big Ocean Women, nos reunimos en persona y virtualmente como OLAJAS (WAVES) alrededor del mundo para analizar nuestros principios mensuales. Este es poder auténtico. Esta es la verdadera IA, “Inteligencia Auténtica” del tipo espiritual, no inteligencia artificial del tipo digital.

Cada una de nosotras tiene el poder de reunirnos y unirnos de maneras auténticas y usar nuestra propia luz y dones para lograr mucho bien en nuestras familias, comunidades y naciones. Como Carolina nos anima:

Quiero que cada una de ustedes empiece a practicar cómo replantear el peso de lo que están aprendiendo con los pensamientos e impresiones que están recibiendo ahora mismo, por el Espíritu Santo y por su brújula interna. Estas impresiones siempre las dirigen hacia soluciones simples que siempre están allí. Quiero que empiecen a pensar: “Bueno, ¿y ahora qué? ¿Qué significa eso, Padre Celestial?” Así que empiecen a practicar. Ese es el proceso de replanteamiento en el que realmente quiero que nos volvamos competentes. Empiecen a practicar cómo se siente descubrir las aplicaciones y soluciones simples de Dios.

Esas son palabras inspiradoras. Cada una de nosotras puede sentirse como David, solo una pequeña gota de agua. Pero juntas formamos poderosas olas de influencia, y esa Inteligencia Auténtica tiene la capacidad de crear un impacto poderoso.
