Abundance in Guatemala English and Spanish

Deep inside the lush country of Guatemala and literally at the end of the road, Big Ocean Women has two WAVEs. Our members of the Siretquiche and Semarac WAVEs committed to giving their children the opportunity to attend preschool, sometimes walking for hours to get there. As their children learned to hold a pencil, draw straight lines and circles and finally letters, the mothers sat beside them, gaining literacy for themselves. The members of these WAVEs speak Kekchi, an indigenous language that does not even resemble Spanish. Yet, by learning to read and write Kekchi, these preschool children are well-prepared to study Spanish in primary school. In fact, they excel and are at the top of their class. 

A group of Big Ocean Women leaders and Mike Peck, the linguist who developed the Kekchi curriculum, traveled to this remote area to attend the graduation of these two pre-schools. The talented teacher, Ana Oxom, and Mike Peck presented each child a signed graduation certificate. A photo was taken. And then we saw the child’s eyes light up as their mother was invited to stand by their child. The second photo revealed abundance. We saw the abundant love of mother and child; we saw the future of a child because of education; we saw that abundance is internal and not dependent on external circumstances. These Guatemalan families are rich in connectedness, in time spent together, in influence, and in shared values and culture. This internal richness is abundance. These beautiful Guatemalans know how to meet their challenges, to literally climb and descend rocky and steep paths, to face hunger and illness with courage and hope for tomorrow, and work hard to meet each day’s needs. 

After the pre-school graduations, the leaders of these two WAVEs met with Vilma Sagebin, our WAVE committee chair. They received training on how to organize and operate their WAVE meetings. We went on to two more villages and met with women there who were hoping to also start a WAVE and become part of Big Ocean Women. 

As Big Ocean Women, we train women to become leaders in their homes and communities. As we discuss the monthly tenets, we learn to articulate what we perhaps have not realized before, that we are abundantly blessed with innate gifts and strengths. Big Ocean Women also helps our members see how our connection to God brings abundant blessings and makes us strong enough to face trials and come up with ways to navigate through these trials. That is the importance of our monthly discussions of the tenets with our WAVE communities. Through these discussions, we are able to articulate what we perhaps haven’t realized before. We become influential leaders who are a light and strength to others. We can look inside our own hearts and minds and be deeply grateful for our current situations and the blessings of being who we are at this moment. 

Driving through the jungles of Guatemala for hours on treacherous roads, we finally met with these amazing mothers and their children. We were inspired by them and felt their abundant strength and goodness. Our experience there helped us more clearly see the abundance of life wherever we are and in whatever circumstance we find ourselves.

Abundancia en Guatemala

En lo profundo de la exuberante Guatemala, y literalmente al final del camino, Big Ocean Women cuenta con dos WAVEs. Nuestros miembros de las WAVEs Siretquiche y Semarac se comprometieron a brindarles a sus hijos la oportunidad de atender al preescolar, a veces caminando durante horas para llegar. Mientras sus hijos aprendían a sostener un lápiz, a dibujar líneas rectas, círculos y, finalmente, letras, las madres se sentaban junto a ellos, adquiriendo alfabetización. Los miembros de estas WAVEs hablan kekchí, una lengua indígena que ni siquiera se parece al español. Sin embargo, al aprender a leer y escribir en kekchí, estos niños en edad preescolar están bien preparados para estudiar español en la escuela primaria. De hecho, sobresalen y son los mejores de su clase.

Un grupo de líderes de Big Ocean Women y Mike Peck, el lingüista que desarrolló el currículo kekchi, viajaron a esta zona remota para asistir a la graduación de estos dos preescolares. Estos hermosos guatemaltecos saben cómo afrontar sus desafíos, cómo subir y bajar caminos rocosos y empinados, cómo enfrentar el hambre y la enfermedad con valentía y esperanza en el futuro, y cómo trabajar duro para satisfacer las necesidades de cada día.

Tras las graduaciones de preescolar, las líderes de estas dos WAVE se reunieron con Vilma Sagebin, presidenta de nuestro comité de WAVE. Recibieron capacitación sobre cómo organizar y dirigir sus reuniones. Visitamos dos aldeas más y nos reunimos con mujeres que también aspiraban a formar una WAVE y formar parte de Big Ocean Women.

Como Big Ocean Women, capacitamos mujeres para que se conviertan en líderes en sus hogares y comunidades. Al dialogar sobre los principios mensuales, aprendemos a expresar lo que quizás no hayamos comprendido antes: que somos bendecidas con abundantes dones y fortalezas innatas. Big Ocean Women también ayuda a nuestros miembros a ver cómo nuestra conexión con Dios nos trae abundantes bendiciones y nos fortalece para enfrentar las pruebas y encontrar maneras de superarlas. De ahí la importancia de nuestros diálogos mensuales sobre los principios con nuestras comunidades WAVE. A través de estos diálogos, podemos expresar lo que quizás no hayamos comprendido antes. Nos convertimos en líderes influyentes que son luz y fortaleza para los demás. Podemos mirar dentro de nuestro corazón y mente y estar profundamente agradecidas por nuestra situación actual y las bendiciones de ser quienes somos en este momento.

Tras conducir durante horas por las selvas de Guatemala por caminos peligrosos, finalmente conocimos a estas maravillosas madres y a sus hijos. Nos inspiraron y sentimos su inmensa fuerza y bondad. Nuestra experiencia allí nos ayudó a ver con mayor claridad la abundancia de vida dondequiera que estemos y en cualquier circunstancia en que nos encontremos.
