Fatima in Jos: Be of Good Cheer in Tribulation (English and Spanish)

There is no doubt that Fatima and other Christians in Nigeria are facing tribulation as they are targeted and persecuted because of their faith. In a recent interview, Fatima shared an overview of this difficult situation that has developed. 

She explained that Muslims and Christians are about evenly divided overall in the country, with more Muslims in the north and a majority of Christians in the south. Other religions and even atheists also make up the total population. Over time, certain politicians, terrorists, and their like have determined they should be the voice and power of the entire country, ignoring the rights of other Nigerians, including Christians. The leadership in power seems to support or turn a blind eye to these atrocities. There is a movement to apply the Islamic law to Christians by force. This at times includes forcing Islamic laws on everyone. 

Other factions that escalate this violence include Boko Haram killing at will, abducting, and kidnapping children, bandits taking over homes and demanding a protection tax, and herdsmen who graze their cattle on people’s farmlands, carry assault weapons, set fires, murder, and displace people from their homes and commit other unthinkable atrocities. Recently US Congressman Riley Moore, who was part of a delegation sent to investigate Christian persecution in Nigeria, expressed deep distress at the violence as “harrowing.” Fatima also detailed the severe upheaval in the entire country that includes kidnapping as a million-dollar business, often targeting clergy and many Nigerian citizens and demanding ransom. As a woman of faith, Fatima explains how turning to God can bring peace and solutions. First, she explains that choosing God does not make us free from trials. Christ made this clear when He taught, “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world,” (John 16:33). Here are some specific suggestions she offers:

• Pray and pour out your heart to Him.
• Recognize that the scriptures warn of terrible times to come, but also teach us to hope and believe that the Lord is with us.
• Meet and pray with others. United faith expands exponentially and increases our power against the Adversary. 
• Encourage one another, especially meeting together physically to unite our strength in God and our faith. 

Fatima has followed her own advice. She serves as the leader in the Jos Big Ocean Women WAVE (Women Achieving Vast Empowerment), strengthening members of the group and reaching out to the community. She meets with over 50 women each month offering community and comfort. Even in their desperate circumstances, this WAVE chose to share and lift those around them who have even less than they do. When asked how we can lift and encourage those who are just beginning on the path of faith, she offered suggestions she has learned through her years of service and experience. First, help them accept and realize we can’t succeed on our own. That’s why we need God. Ask for help and depend on His power. She used the example of how differently we would approach finding food based on if we had food ready and on hand or if we did not know how we would eat that day. Our seeking needs to be diligent because His help and love for our souls is more vital than food for our bodies. Because of that, we can be of good cheer. 

She emphasizes that we must come to know Him for ourselves, not because of what a pastor or another person tells us. She invites all to talk to Him as a beloved friend and mentor, right from the heart. Connecting with Him will overcome fear. Remember Isaiah teaches us He is our Father. Then, come without fear or shame, ask for help. He helps us and we can grow. Again, we can find assurance with fellow believers. Together in Christ, we are stronger than Satan. 

Christ is the Way, especially the only way to be of good cheer in the tribulations of the world in our time. So, lift up your hearts and find joy and peace in Him. Then gather to strengthen yourself and others.

Ella enfatiza que debemos llegar a conocerlo por nosotros mismos, no por lo que un pastor u otra persona nos diga. Invita a todos a hablar con Él como con un amigo querido y un mentor, directamente desde el corazón. Conectarnos con Él vencerá el miedo. Recuerda que Isaías nos enseña que Él es nuestro Padre. Entonces, ven sin miedo ni vergüenza, pide ayuda. Él nos ayuda y podemos crecer. Nuevamente, podemos encontrar seguridad con otros creyentes. Juntos en Cristo, somos más fuertes que Satanás.
