We Believe in God and Are Women of Faith

About 10 years ago, I met a lovely woman named Aduke. Aduke had moved from her home country of Nigeria and was living in Houston, where my husband and I lived. She spoke little to no English when we met her, but she was full of faith–the kind of faith that shines through in every interaction. 

Aduke had very little to her name and no means of transportation, so my husband and I would pick her up for church each Sunday. During those rides, she used the few English words she had to speak of God and her family. More often than not, she brought family and neighbors with her to church–usually small children who lived with or near her. She took it upon herself to teach them of God and how to prioritize faith in their lives.

One of my favorite memories of Aduke was when she discovered, after a year or so of our rides, that I was expecting my first baby. Before I could say anything, she noticed my protruding belly and started crying. She threw her arms in the air and said over and over, “Praise God! Praise God!” Family and faith were everything to her, and she showed that in every deed.

This month we are privileged to hear similar stories and insights from our authors as they address January’s tenet: We believe in God and are women of faith. Austin compares the example of his mother to the faithful mothers in ancient times. Shelli beautifully describes the power of community, of supporting those around us. Emily inspires us with an example from Big Ocean Women’s Gambia WAVE, where women work together and trust in God. Lisa teaches us lessons in faith learned from Gloria’s work in Nigeria, and Norma details how faith helps Fatima and her Jos Nigeria WAVE find solace in tribulation. Jessica tells us about an impactful friendship in her life and how God is present in the daily details.

We hope you are inspired by our authors’ words and that you will see similar examples all around you. To quote this month’s tenet, “As we access our collective faith, we will be led to generate creative solutions and offer significant help.”

Creemos en Dios y Somos Mujeres de Fe

Hace unos 10 años conocí a una mujer encantadora llamada Aduke. Aduke se había mudado desde su país natal, Nigeria, y vivía en Houston, donde vivíamos mi esposo y yo. Cuando la conocimos, hablaba poco, casi nada de inglés, pero estaba llena de fe—ese tipo de fe que brilla en cada interacción.

Aduke tenía muy poco y no contaba con ningún medio de transporte, así que mi esposo y yo la recogíamos cada domingo para llevarla a la iglesia. Durante esos trayectos, usaba las pocas palabras en inglés que conocía para hablar de Dios y de su familia. Con frecuencia traía consigo a familiares y vecinos—generalmente niños pequeños que vivían con ella o cerca de ella. Ella misma se encargaba de enseñarles sobre Dios y de cómo dar prioridad a la fe en sus vidas.

Uno de mis recuerdos favoritos de Aduke fue cuando descubrió, después de un año aproximadamente de llevarla a la iglesia, que yo estaba esperando a mi primer bebé. Antes de que pudiera decir algo, notó mi vientre abultado y comenzó a llorar.
