It’s a Small World After All (English and Spanish)

“Six Degrees” is recognized as the world’s first social media platform. It is based on the popular “six degrees of separation” theory, which suggests that no human is more than six connections removed from another human. In other words, the theory posits that if you want to meet someone, you would only need to ask a friend to ask a friend to ask a friend to ask a friend to ask a friend to ask a friend, and that someone in that chain would have a connection to the person you wanted to meet.

The world today is more connected than it has ever been. While the “six degrees of separation theory” is not proven fact, it highlights an interesting question. Do we fully understand or appreciate the extent to which we can influence or impact others?

It is common to feel that we cannot do anything, that we do not have any influence. We may look at our children, feel that they are making their own decisions, and then assume that our power is negligible. 

Despite this, God has given us each the power to influence and shape the world around us. Not just our little garden, and not just our neighborhood. We each can have influence the world over.

Faith in God inevitably means something about us. If God is all powerful, and notices the sparrow falling to the ground, then He can cause something to happen through us, in our corner of the world. If we truly believe in God, then we have to believe that He has the power to empower us.

None of us are exceptions to God’s power. None of us are exempt from being able to make a difference. Due to this, Big Ocean Women encourages and teaches women to embrace their global sisterhood and work to create and implement generative solutions that can bless generations to come.

I am an attorney, and I started my own law firm. I made the goal when I started that I wanted to become an attorney that one of the banks in town referred people to when they were asked about estate plans, as I knew that many bank tellers received inquiries from bank patrons about estate planning.

The problem was that I did not know anyone that worked at the bank. I tried to visit a few bank locations and talk to some tellers or managers, and I left my business cards, but none of that worked. I prayed about the goal, as I was trying to get my law firm going so that I could support my family, and the only thing I received in response was a prompting to help a family in the neighborhood with a trust.

I eventually offered to help the family for free, and I set up a trust for them. Soon after that, I received a call from one of the heads at the bank, saying that this family had told him about me. He wanted to meet with me, and I suddenly was receiving referrals from this bank, all because I connected with and served another person.

I have seen this happen many times, in many different ways. The business of a bank in town was only one step removed from me, connected to a family in my neighborhood that I would have never guessed knew anyone at this bank. Since then I have discovered that within my connections, I am only one step removed from Senators, Representatives, business leaders, and others. People I know have friends in other countries, who have friends as well.

In other words, our world is much smaller and connected than we often believe. Simply because we do not see how close we are to something means that we often assume that there is no path to make a difference in an area. Yet, when we exercise faith and believe in God’s power, including His power to connect, the world grows much closer, only a few relationships or steps away.

While reading this, please take a few moments to reflect on your faith. 

Do you believe that God could connect you in a way that helps make a difference? 

Are there others you could work with to create generative solutions that can bless generations to come?

The answer, is, of course, yes! People around the world desire and yearn for good. Reach out, share your beliefs, share your goals, and ask to connect with like-minded people. You will be amazed at how small the world really is and how quickly you can be making a difference much larger than you could ever do alone. From God’s perspective, it is a small world after all, and we each have the power to be an influence and force, for good.

Es un mundo pequeño después de todo

En otras palabras, la teoría plantea que si quieres conocer a alguien, solo necesitarías pedirle a un amigo que le pida a un amigo que le pida a un amigo que le pida a un amigo que le pida a un amigo que le pida a un amigo, y alguien en esa cadena tendría una conexión con la persona que deseas conocer.

El mundo de hoy está más conectado que nunca. Aunque la teoría de los “seis grados de separación” no es un hecho comprobado, destaca una pregunta interesante: ¿entendemos o apreciamos plenamente el alcance con el que podemos influir o impactar a otros?

Es común sentir que no podemos hacer nada, que no tenemos influencia. Podemos mirar a nuestros hijos, sentir que están tomando sus propias decisiones y asumir que nuestro poder es insignificante.

A pesar de esto, Dios nos ha dado a cada uno el poder de influir y moldear el mundo que nos rodea. No solo nuestro pequeño jardín, y no solo nuestro vecindario. Cada uno de nosotros puede tener influencia en todo el mundo.

La fe en Dios inevitablemente dice algo sobre nosotros. Si Dios es todopoderoso y nota cuando un gorrión cae al suelo, entonces Él puede hacer que algo suceda a través de nosotros, en nuestro rincón del mundo. Si realmente creemos en Dios, entonces debemos creer que Él tiene el poder para empoderarnos.

Ninguno de nosotros es una excepción al poder de Dios. Ninguno de nosotros está exento de poder hacer una diferencia. Debido a esto, Big Ocean Women anima y enseña a las mujeres a abrazar su hermandad global y trabajar para crear e implementar soluciones generativas que puedan bendecir a las generaciones venideras.

Soy abogado y comencé mi propio bufete. Cuando empecé, me propuse como meta convertirme en un abogado al que uno de los bancos de la ciudad remitiera personas cuando preguntaran sobre planes patrimoniales, ya que sabía que muchos cajeros recibían consultas de los clientes del banco sobre planificación patrimonial.

El problema era que no conocía a nadie que trabajara en el banco. He visto que esto sucede muchas veces, de muchas maneras diferentes. Las personas que conozco tienen amigos en otros países, quienes también tienen amigos.

En otras palabras, nuestro mundo es mucho más pequeño y conectado de lo que solemos creer. Simplemente porque no vemos cuán cerca estamos de algo, solemos asumir que no hay un camino para marcar una diferencia en un área. Sin embargo, cuando ejercemos fe y creemos en el poder de Dios, incluido Su poder para conectar, el mundo se vuelve mucho más cercano, solo a unas pocas relaciones o pasos de distancia.
