Personal Reflection on the February Tenet: “We Are Each Unique And Innately Worthy Of Respect” by Gloria Ezeonyeasi
I was reflecting on the February tenet as I prayed the Holy Rosary and one of our UN classes (thank you, Carolina) came to mind wherein we acknowledged that our DNA is the Holy Spirit. So, while I was contemplating on the sorrowful mysteries of the Holy Rosary, I was awe struck by how much Jesus endured to give us our uniqueness.
That is not to say that we had to wait until Jesus suffered and died before acquiring our divine, unique identity. We see our innate uniqueness when Isaiah 1:5 described our sacred destiny as preceding our conception and birth. Equally, reflecting on the sacrifice of the Cross as the mystical exchange that brought about our unique, eternal identity and a redeemed nature deserving of respect, does not overshadow the human masterpiece described in Psalm 139.
It is possible that when one thinks of this tenet one may not readily think of all the positive qualities we possess. It is possible that the enemy immediately reminds us of our sinful past, the poor habits we are still dealing with, our failures and our fears. Those stages, phases, situations, moments, when we are at our lowest ebb, we are likely to wonder how a person like this deserves respect. We may think, what is so special about me?!
So, this tenet affords us the space to reflect on what actually makes us unique and innately worthy of respect. We are unique and innately worthy of respect because:
We are made in God’s image, reflecting His value and worth (Genesis 1:27.)
God crafted us with care and purpose, making us wonderfully unique (Psalm 139:13-14.)
God values and loves us, considering us precious and honoured (Isaiah 43:4.)
Our individuality means we bring unique contributions and worth to the body of Christ (1Corinthians 12:12-31.)
God cares for us deeply, valuing us more than many sparrows (Matthew 10:29-31.)
For God chose us even before the world was created to be holy and blameless in his sight (Ephesians 1:4.) Hallelujah “…in His sight” and not in the sight of those who want to judge and condemn us!
God Himself elevated and made us a “little less than a god; He crowned us with glory; He set us over the work of His hands and put all things under our feet” (Psalm 8:5-6.)
As Big Ocean Women we are unique in our mission to bring light to a world that has ceased to see the divine and inherent worth of a person but instead forces its own tags on people. Discriminatory tags that continue to foster hatred and sheer dehumanization. We must shine our light and expel the darkness around us by first recognising and valuing our uniqueness and self-worth in the light of God’s love, His divine endowment in us and His plan and purpose for us.
