Awake and Arise: A Global Summit Celebrating the Peak of Maternal Feminism (English and Spanish)

Big Ocean Women sponsored our first annual Maternal Leadership Summit on Mother’s Day weekend in May. A summit is defined as the highest point of a mountain and also a meeting of leaders from two or more nations. Our gathering met the criteria for both definitions. 

We were pleased that so many came searching for guidance on how women can and do shape the world. Women brought friends, daughters, mothers, husbands, and fathers. All had their vision enhanced to see the summit of possibilities and power inherent in maternal feminism, and how they can be realized by our voices and our daily climb of tenacious love and patience to strengthen ourselves and the rising generation.

Many hands and hours created an inspiring environment at the Hyatt Place Hotel in Lehi, Utah. Board member Vilma Sagebin chaired the event and worked cheerfully and tirelessly to organize the details and secure donors. In addition to our Big Ocean team members who were presenters, a host of hands pitched in to create the feeling of common purpose and determination that exuded from decorations, statements of beliefs, welcoming smiles, and heartwarming beauty adorning our meeting place. Our devoted board members and leaders have also spent years learning, growing, and preparing to share this vital mission with women around the world. 

The summit began with the retelling of our story of beginnings by founder, Carolina Allen. Her heavenly call to stand for faith, family, and motherhood began when she attended funeral services in Hawaii for her Sister-in-Law Moana, a single woman who changed lives with her love, constant service, and example. Moana’s sister, Keikalani, performed a special Hawaiian dance and shared her beautiful aloha spirit inspiring us to seek God in our lives. 

Presenters built on this foundation with a review of our culture and impact and some training based on our years of taking delegations to the United Nations (UN) Commission on the Status of Women. Founder Carolina has spent years compiling and analyzing the underlying purposes and results of the UN agenda and how to counteract it. She has a book in the works as well as teaching tools for women and families currently available. Various Big Ocean Women leaders described troubling trends and actions regarding language, education, behavior, and religion. The Q&A was also inspiring and encouraging as women shared their passion for our collective power as women. 

Even though the motives and results of the UN agenda can be difficult and even frightening, we were given tools and charges to unite and stand for families and women. Each of us has the power and duty to do all we can in our sphere of influence through our example, voices, and actions in our homes and communities. Then we must reach out to women everywhere who are desperately in need of light and hope, holding aloft the banner of maternal love and power. 

This Awake and Arise Summit was a type of advance party experience to lead the way to sharing our message in future summits, but also in homes, neighborhoods, meetings, and other gatherings of like-minded women. 

Attendees enjoyed sharing ideas and getting better acquainted over lunch at beautifully prepared tables in the warmth of the May sunshine. Following lunch, we enjoyed a presentation and invitation from ideas of Heather Farrell to reclaim Mother’s Day and its original purpose to mourn lost children and scale the daunting summit of giving all women equal rights and calling for peace. 

Next, we were led to higher ground by our guest speaker, Madeleine Wallin from Sweden, who has used her own motherhood to become a voice and advocate for the power women exert most forcefully–as mothers (including all who nurture children) in their homes. Her ideas have ignited anger and roadblocks, but have also united other women who know in their very souls that no one can influence children more effectively and permanently than mothers, who have the gift of spending time helping their children feel safe and loved as they grow to achieve their potential. How we admire Madeleine for her powerful influence whose motherhood gave her a voice that she had been afraid to raise previously. 

In a most encouraging way, we continued our summit journey as we witnessed the elevating influence of our Big Ocean tenets drawing local groups of women around the globe to organize and apply these tenets. Often one woman feels the truth of our beliefs and invites two or three others to help her form a local group, known as a WAVE (Women Achieving Vast Empowerment). They receive training, support, and evaluation to “graduate” as official WAVEs.

Stories and photos featured concrete examples of what these WAVEs have done in lifting groups of women to become self-reliant, compassionate, resourceful, and courageous. Board members and leaders shared examples of WAVEs who have raised pigs, made jewelry, formed schools, served those who have even less than they do, and united to keep themselves and their families and friends as safe as possible in very tumultuous times. Some of the presenters represented the global definition of a summit including Fatima from Nigeria and Gloria from London, England bearing unapologetic witness of the power of faith and duty to God as it guides their work.

A stirring musical number, “Rise Up,” performed by Kaci Whitby and an original video featuring Big Ocean Women’s work, prepared us for an invitation to hold our ground and lead others to the summit of maternal power and commitment.

So, gather your climbing gear, however humble and small, and begin the trek with us on our expedition to the summit of maternal strength!

Despierten y Levántense: Una Cumbre Global que Celebra la Cima del Feminismo Maternal

Big Ocean Women patrocinó nuestra primera Cumbre Anual de Liderazgo Maternal durante el fin de semana del Día de la Madre en mayo. Una cumbre se define como el punto más alto de una montaña y también como una reunión de líderes de dos o más naciones. Nuestro encuentro cumplió con ambos significados.

Nos complació que tantas personas asistieran en busca de orientación sobre cómo las mujeres pueden y de hecho moldean el mundo. Las mujeres trajeron amigas, hijas, madres, esposos y padres. Todos ampliaron su visión para ver la cima de posibilidades y el poder inherente en el feminismo maternal, y cómo puede realizarse mediante nuestras voces y nuestra ascensión diaria de amor tenaz y paciencia para fortalecernos a nosotras mismas y a la generación que está creciendo.

Muchas manos y horas crearon un ambiente inspirador en el Hyatt Place Hotel en Lehi, Utah. Las asistentes disfrutaron compartiendo ideas y conociéndose mejor durante el almuerzo en mesas bellamente preparadas bajo el cálido sol de mayo. Después del almuerzo, disfrutamos de una presentación e invitación de Heather Farrell para recuperar el Día de la Madre y su propósito original: llorar a los hijos perdidos y escalar la imponente cumbre de otorgar a todas las mujeres derechos iguales.

Miembros de la junta y líderes compartieron ejemplos de WAVEs que han criado cerdos, hecho joyería, formado escuelas, servido a quienes tienen aún menos que ellas y se han unido para mantenerse a sí mismas, a sus familias y a sus amigas lo más seguras posible en tiempos muy tumultuosos. Algunas de las presentadoras representaron la definición global de una cumbre, incluyendo a Fatima de Nigeria y Gloria de Londres, Inglaterra, quienes dieron un testimonio firme del poder de la fe y el deber hacia Dios que guía su labor.
