Meet Our WAVE: Eldoret Kenya (English and Spanish)

“We are free to choose and willingly accept responsibility for our choices.”

The women in the Eldoret Kenya WAVE and their president, Immaculate Nachaki, embody this month’s tenet. In a recent interview, Immaculate and I discussed how the ability to choose has impacted her as a Big Ocean Woman.

Emily: “What does agency and the ability to choose mean to you?”

Immaculate: “For me, agency means freedom to choose between good and evil, or the power to make choices regardless of my circumstances. It also is understanding that while I may not control everything that happened in my life, I can choose how I respond. The ability to choose gives me more confidence, purpose, and ownership of my future.”

Immaculate is an inspiring example of using the power of agency to strengthen herself, her home, and her family. Immaculate and her husband Felix Kogo have three biological children and two older foster sons they invited into their family.

“Sometimes it’s challenging bringing someone who is addicted with drugs in your home…. I had to pray to God to guide me. I couldn’t see these young boys suffering outside when I have a space in my house, and these are kids who wanted to learn more about God. I was like, It’s fine. They can just come and stay with us. There’s no problem. We can take care. We can treat them like our own children so that they can feel that love….We have never lacked anything like food. Since we brought them at home, we just felt like we are one big family. My children feel like they have big brothers. We treat each other like family members. These are like my children. So we have never lacked anything. That’s what I can say, and I thank God for that.”

 

 

Immaculate has also demonstrated powerful agency in helping her community.

Emily: “How did your power to choose lead you to establish a WAVE in your community?”

Immaculate: “Starting a WAVE was a choice to move beyond personal growth and invite the growth of other women. After learning the valuable principles through Big Ocean Women, I felt a responsibility to share those opportunities with others. I chose to step forward even when I wasn’t sure I had all the answers, because I believed that women in my community deserved a space to learn and support one another and also discover their own potential. That was a meaningful decision that I made.”

Immaculate started a WAVE of 13 women in her community in Kenya. She is supported by vice president, Celestine Muturi, secretary, Rebecca Obanda, and treasurer, Linda Chitera. They meet together monthly in their church building, which is convenient and safe for all the women. It is also free to meet there, which is a blessing because many women and families in their community do not have reliable income. This sisterhood has been a blessing for these women, as reflected in the name they chose for their WAVE, “Connection Crew.” But, as with all growth, they have had challenges as well.

Emily: “What have been some of the challenges as you’ve accepted the responsibility to lead that WAVE?”

Immaculate: “Sometimes leading older women is a big challenge for me. Sometimes I feel like these people, they know more than me….It’s not easy, but I try. Leadership has required commitment, patience, and perseverance. There have been many challenges with balancing family responsibilities and also community service, and at times attendance has fluctuated, and also resources have been limited. Accepting responsibilities as a leader has taught me that meaningful change takes time, and it has also taught me to remain constant, encourage others, and also continue serving even when progress is not immediately visible.”

Immaculate is a mentor of pressing forward and choosing to do the good thing not because she feels confident, but because she is part of something bigger than herself. She models that and the women in her WAVE live by that as well.

Emily: “How have you seen the power to choose grow in the lives of women who are a part of your WAVE?”

Immaculate: “One of the greatest joys has been watching women gain confidence in their ability to make decisions and to take action. I have seen women choose to start small businesses and improve their financial habits and pursue education, strengthen family relationships, and also become leaders in their own right. And many who once doubted themselves now speak with confidence and take initiative. And they are also discovering that they have the power to shape their future through the choices they make every day. And I’m one of them.”

This growth has impacted the individual women in the WAVE, and it has also borne good fruit in their community.

Emily: “What impact has the WAVE had on your community?”

Immaculate: “The WAVE has created a culture of encouragement, learning, and mutual support. Women are sharing knowledge, solving problems together, and becoming more active contributors within their families and community. And as women become more empowered, their families benefit, and that positive influence spreads throughout the community. Also the WAVE has helped build stronger relationships, increased hope, and has inspired women to believe that positive change is possible.”

One example of impact in their community was when the Eldoret WAVE saw a need at a school in their community and volunteered to help create a solution.

 

“The school was bushy. It had a lot of grass, so we decided to go and help because the schools were going to open for the children. As a WAVE we decided to go to that school to help. So when we reached the school at first we were scared. We were like, “Oh, how are we going to do this? How are we going to manage?” But I’m grateful that we managed to do it. We went back the second time to clean the school inside. We mopped and cleaned everything, and then the school was clean.”

Though these women do not have many temporal resources, they demonstrate that hard work, collaboration, and a deep desire to make a positive difference are the most important resources they can choose to offer. Their WAVE organized an education event to improve the health conditions for women and girls in their community. 

“We taught them on how to be hygienic, especially when you’re a young girl or a young mother. We decided to teach them on how to use sanitary pads, before and after using them, and how they can dispose of them when they are done using them. We taught them here in the community, and also we went to the rescue center where we taught the same thing on how to become clean, especially when you’re breastfeeding your young baby, and also when you are in your period, how you can be clean.”

These efforts by WAVE members are nurturing generational fruits in health and well-being for their Kenyan community. That is a valuable consequence of how they are using their power to choose.

I asked Immaculate to reflect on the impact of her choice to be a part of something bigger than herself and begin a WAVE in Eldoret.

Emily: “How have you felt or seen yourself change since your involvement with Big Ocean Women?”

Immaculate: “My involvement with Big Ocean Women has transformed me in many ways. I have become more confident, more willing to lead, and more aware of the impact I can have on others. I have also learned to trust my abilities, embrace challenges, and take responsibility for my choices. And most importantly, I have developed a deeper belief in my potential and in the potential of women to create change when they are given opportunity to learn, grow, and support one another. This journey has strengthened my commitment to serving my community and helping other women recognize their own power and potential.”

She went on to say,

“When you compare the first me and the Immaculate that you’re seeing here right now, there is a big change, and I’m so grateful for that. I’m grateful to say that I do my best to help those in need and the people who are around me…. When I was growing up, I used to tell myself that I want to be self-employed. That was my big dream. When I look at where I sit right now, I’m so grateful that my Heavenly Father has not left me. He’s always taking care of me and my children and my husband. We have not lacked anything. Big Ocean has really taught me a lot not to give up in life. I should always have hope that one day everything will be good and I’ll be happy forever.”

These women, individually and collectively, are creating a better world because of their choices to trust God and to serve and connect with all their hearts to others around them.

Immaculate es una mentora en avanzar y elegir hacer lo correcto, no porque se sienta segura, sino porque es parte de algo más grande que ella misma. Ella lo modela, y las mujeres en su WAVE también viven de esa manera.

Emily: “¿Cómo has visto crecer el poder de elegir en las vidas de las mujeres que forman parte de tu WAVE?”

Immaculate: “Una de las mayores alegrías ha sido ver a las mujeres ganar confianza en su capacidad de tomar decisiones y actuar. He visto mujeres elegir iniciar pequeños negocios, mejorar sus hábitos financieros, continuar con la educación, fortalecer las relaciones familiares y también convertirse en líderes por derecho propio. Y muchas que antes dudaban de sí mismas ahora hablan con confianza y toman la iniciativa. Este crecimiento ha impactado a las mujeres individualmente dentro de la WAVE, y también ha dado buenos frutos en su comunidad.

Emily: “¿Qué impacto ha tenido la WAVE en tu comunidad?”

Immaculate: “La WAVE ha creado una cultura de ánimo, aprendizaje y apoyo mutuo. Las mujeres están compartiendo conocimientos, resolviendo problemas juntas y convirtiéndose en contribuyentes más activas dentro de sus familias y comunidad. Y a medida que las mujeres se empoderan más, sus familias se benefician, y esa influencia positiva se extiende por toda la comunidad. Además, la WAVE ha ayudado a construir relaciones más fuertes, ha aumentado la esperanza y ha inspirado a las mujeres a creer que el cambio positivo es posible.”

Un ejemplo del impacto en su comunidad fue cuando la WAVE de Eldoret vio una necesidad en una escuela de su comunidad y se ofreció como voluntaria para ayudar a crear una solución.

“La escuela estaba llena de maleza. Tenía mucho pasto, así que decidimos ir a ayudar porque las escuelas iban a abrir para los niños. Como WAVE decidimos ir a esa escuela para ayudar. Cuando llegamos al principio estábamos asustadas. Pensamos: ‘Oh, ¿cómo vamos a hacer esto? ¿Cómo vamos a lograrlo?’ Pero estoy agradecida de que lo logramos. Regresamos una segunda vez para limpiar el interior de la escuela. Trapear y limpiar todo, y entonces la escuela quedó limpia.”

Aunque estas mujeres no tienen muchos recursos materiales, demuestran que el trabajo duro, la colaboración y un profundo deseo de marcar una diferencia positiva son los recursos más importantes que pueden elegir ofrecer. Su WAVE organizó un evento educativo para mejorar las condiciones de salud de mujeres y niñas en su comunidad.

“Les enseñamos cómo ser higiénicas, especialmente cuando eres una joven o una madre joven. Decidimos enseñarles cómo usar las toallas sanitarias, antes y después de usarlas, y cómo pueden desecharlas cuando ya terminaron de usarlas. Les enseñamos aquí en la comunidad, y también fuimos al centro de rescate donde enseñamos lo mismo: cómo mantenerse limpias, especialmente cuando estás amamantando a tu bebé pequeño, y también cuando estás en tu período, cómo puedes mantenerte limpia.”

Estos esfuerzos de las integrantes de la WAVE están cultivando frutos generacionales en salud y bienestar para su comunidad keniana. Esa es una valiosa consecuencia de cómo están usando su poder de elegir.

Le pedí a Immaculate que reflexionara sobre el impacto de su decisión de ser parte de algo más grande que ella misma y comenzar una WAVE en Eldoret.

Emily: “¿Cómo te has sentido o cómo te has visto cambiar desde tu participación en Big Ocean Women?”

Immaculate: “Mi participación en Big Ocean Women me ha transformado de muchas maneras. Me he vuelto más segura, más dispuesta a liderar y más consciente del impacto que puedo tener en otros. También he aprendido a confiar en mis habilidades, aceptar desafíos y asumir la responsabilidad de mis elecciones. Ella continuó diciendo:

Ese era mi gran sueño. Cuando miro dónde estoy ahora, estoy muy agradecida de que mi Padre Celestial no me haya dejado. Siempre cuida de mí, de mis hijos y de mi esposo. No nos ha faltado nada. Big Ocean realmente me ha enseñado mucho a no rendirme en la vida. Siempre debo tener esperanza de que algún día todo estará bien y seré feliz para siempre.”
