Seeking after knowledge and wisdom is a powerful way for each of us to reach and grow, to improve our circumstances and lift those around us. Education unlocks the gateways to better lives around the world, and we have seen that power through the experiences of many Big Ocean Women members and friends. It is always so inspiring to hear about women who have had the opportunity to learn a skill that then sets them on a path to being self-sufficient.
Beyond learning new skills that enable us to earn wages or serve in our communities, there is also value in education that exposes us to ideas and experiences from people who have lived in circumstances different from our own or who have lived lives of courage, who have overcome great difficulties, and have gained wisdom to share.
It is easy to get caught up in the day-to-day to-do list that may not leave much room for seeking beyond what is necessary for survival. Sometimes it feels like you’re being pulled in so many directions, choosing between equally good things that are calling for your time. In seasons when our lives feel this way, how do we hold true to this tenet of seeking after knowledge and wisdom?
It is imperative to recognize that prioritizing and providing for essentials in your life and family is actually the most important step. Your role in your family and sphere of influence is irreplaceable. You learn as you do this all important work simply by doing it well, but as you pursue excellence, you will naturally seek out how to improve your abilities and increase your effectiveness. Mentors, how-to articles, classes through church and community, even participating in your Big Ocean Women WAVE can open your mind to changes large and small that you can make to become better and refine your skills.
Further, it is compelling to know that gaining wisdom can start in your own heart without reaching for outside sources. An important key to know of true wisdom is this: wisdom includes confidence gained from honesty with yourself and others. This isn’t a false confidence or bravado. Wisdom is not an assertion of infallibility. This is a commitment to speaking and acting with integrity, which also means sometimes recognizing and admitting mistakes. When that happens, learn from it, but do not tear yourself down for being imperfect. Imperfection is part of being human, and should be looked at as an opportunity for growth.
Another opportunity we all have is to look at everyone we meet as an individual with something to teach us. Because our life experiences are all so vastly different, we can learn from each other and gain perspective, empathy, and understanding that has value and can add depth to how we think and react to the world around us. As much as we want to help other people, sometimes we need help. Speaking to friends and strangers and asking about what led them to where they are or why they believe what they do is a compelling and beneficial way to foster connection and understanding.
Each new day is a gift with opportunities for us to seek increased knowledge and wisdom, to look around and find out about our world, to try again to be a little better than we were the day before.
