Aprovechando la Diversidad Global: Mujeres y Talento

Cuando pienso en diversidad, pienso en el mundo y los diferentes continentes, países, ciudades que conforman geográficamente el planeta donde vivimos. Pienso en las mujeres y en el movimiento intercontinental que hay ya sea viajando a través de un avión que sigue un destino, o caminando para atravesar la frontera que divide a un país de otro. Las fronteras entre países se hicieron para dividir el territorio, y a pesar que también divide físicamente a las personas, no es motivo para separar nuestra fe y amor. Alrededor del mundo existen miles de historias que comparten el servicio y el talento entre nosotras para fortalecernos y unirnos en hermandad, porque eso es lo que somos, somos hermanas de fe que vivimos en diferentes países, hablamos diferentes idiomas, tenemos diferentes culturas y costumbres, pero nos une un propósito en común: ayudarnos las unas a las otras para aumentar nuestra unión global.

En el año 2015 vivía en México y viajé a Curitiba, Brasil para prestar servicio comunitario. Hubo muchos ciudadanos a los que conocí y juntos ayudamos a familias, personas que se sentían solas y estaban necesitadas por las circunstancias en que vivían. Recuerdo a una mujer mayor de edad que yo estimaba mucho por el servicio que me prestaba y su comida deliciosa que compartía conmigo, su nombre era Tere. Un día, ella estaba agitada y se sentía muy triste porque su vecina la culpaba por algo que ella no había hecho. Su vecina le dijo palabras muy duras que hicieron que Tere fuera a su sala y lloraba sin parar. Apenas unos minutos después llegué a su casa y la encontré en este estado por lo que corrí a abrazarla.

Hice una pequeña oración en mi mente rogando a Dios saber qué hacer para ayudarla. La respuesta fue muy clara: Canta una canción que a Tere le calmaría. Recordé una canción que habla de Dios y que Él desea que estemos cerca de Él para sentir paz. La empecé a cantar y a notar como su llanto comenzó a cesar poco a poco y sus ojitos me miraron fijamente y me dieron las gracias sin siquiera pronunciar palabra alguna. Jean Bingham dijo: “Entre las mujeres encontramos fuerza cuando ayudamos una a la otra”. Este es un ejemplo de cómo el servicio nos fortaleció y unió más como amigas, hermanas en Dios y como comunidad porque debido al amor que le tengo, ví su necesidad y ofrecí mi ayuda, tal como ella lo había hecho muchas veces anteriores conmigo.  Fue muy especial haber compartido uno de mis talentos para ayudarla y consolarla en ese momento difícil que estaba viviendo.

Pasaron los años y seguimos en contacto, no importaba que ella siguiera en Brasil y yo viviera en México, las fronteras nos separaban físicamente pero nuestra amistad, fe y unión era aún más fuerte que aquella bella tarde que compartimos juntas. Pienso que así como Tere estaba sufriendo en ese momento, muchas mujeres también sufren por diferentes circunstancias y necesitan de amigas, de buenas vecinas, de una mano que sostener y un hombro en el cual puedan llorar y sentir paz y consuelo. Nos necesitamos unas a otras. Cada una de nosotras tiene talentos maravillosos como escuchar, compartir palabras de consuelo, animar, cantar, tocar algún instrumento, o con lo que puede ayudar a alguien más. Hagamos de compartir nuestros talentos mientras servimos a las demás nuestro propósito en conjunto. Qué privilegio es cumplir con este propósito.

When I think of diversity, I think of the world and the different continents, countries, and cities that geographically make up the planet where we live. I think of women and the intercontinental movement that occurs whether traveling by plane to a destination or walking to cross the border that divides one country from another. Borders between countries were made to divide territory, and although they also physically divide people, it is not a reason to separate our faith and love. Around the world, there are thousands of stories that share service and talent among us to strengthen and unite us in sisterhood, because that is what we are, we are sisters of faith who live in different countries, speak different languages, have different cultures and customs, but we are united by a common purpose: to help each other to increase our global unity.

In 2015, I lived in Mexico and traveled to Curitiba, Brazil to provide community service. There were many citizens I met, and together we helped families and individuals who felt lonely and were in need due to their living circumstances. I remember an older woman whom I greatly admired for the service she provided and the delicious food she shared with me; her name was Tere. One day, she was agitated and very sad because her neighbor blamed her for something she had not done. Her neighbor said harsh words that made Tere go to her living room and cry non-stop. Just a few minutes later, I arrived at her house and found her in this state, so I ran to hug her.

I said a small prayer in my mind, asking God to know what to do to help her. The answer was very clear: Sing a song that would calm Tere. I remembered a song that talks about God and how He wants us to be close to Him to feel peace. I started singing and noticed how her crying began to subside little by little, and her eyes looked at me intently, thanking me without even saying a word. Jean Bingham said: “Among women, we find strength when we help each other.” This is an example of how service strengthened and united us more as friends, sisters in God, and as a community because, due to the love I have for her, I saw her need and offered my help, just as she had done many times before with me. It was very special to have shared one of my talents to help and comfort her in that difficult moment she was going through.

Years passed, and we remained in contact. It didn’t matter that she stayed in Brazil and I lived in Mexico; the borders physically separated us, but our friendship, faith, and bond were even stronger than that beautiful afternoon we shared together. I think that just as Tere was suffering at that moment, many women also suffer from different circumstances and need friends, good neighbors, a hand to hold, and a shoulder on which they can cry and feel peace and comfort. We need each other. Each of us has wonderful talents like listening, sharing words of comfort, encouraging others, singing, playing an instrument, or talents with which we can help someone else. Let us make sharing our talents while serving others our shared purpose. What a privilege it is to fulfill it.
