Houston, We Have a Problem: UN CSC Presentation by Erica Komisar

October 31, 2019

Erica Komisar shared her research on the first thousand days of a child’s life at the U.N. Civil Societies Conference in Salt Lake City.  She said, “Mothers are not just critically important to children emotionally, they are important to children biologically, for their mental health and emotional wellness.”

Houston we have a problem, we now have 1 in 5 children in America with some kind of mental disorder, which means anxiety, depression, ADHD, and aggressive behavior. We have a 400% increase with children under the age of 12 on anti-depressants, and 119% increase in eating disorder hospitalization for children under 12.

If you don’t have time to watch her talk, listen to it as you would a podcast. For a young mother, this information is life changing.

After 13 years of research, that was not accessible to the public. Erica decided to write the book, “Being There, Why Prioritizing Motherhood in  the First Three Years Matters.”  She is a child psychologist in New York City and also writes for the Wall Street Journal.
