Mothers: A Powerful Influence (English and Spanish)

As we celebrate a decade of Big Ocean Women’s influence and our mission to stand for faith, family, and motherhood, the following ideas and words spoke to my heart:

• Our movement is led by women whose power is rooted not in the rejection of motherhood, but in the fierce embrace of it. (Carolina Allen, Big Ocean Women founder)
• The hand that rocks the cradle is the hand that rules the world. (From a poem by William Ross Wallace that has become a noteworthy proverb.) 

In addition, my heart turned to the profound influence of my mother, noted in my 2017 article.   

Recently I read a post on social media celebrating the influence of a mother I know and love. She and her husband have a large family that have been loved, nurtured, and influenced by their example. Their son, Austin Hepworth, has written several articles about the influence of his parents. This one touched me deeply and certainly defines the powerful influence of his mother, and all the other women in the world who nurture and teach the rising generation. With his permission, I share his powerful post:  

I went to Hong Kong when I was 21 to translate at a world Gem, Watch, and Jewelry trade show for a silver company that I worked for at the time. I was there as a 21 year old ‘kid’ translating for some CEOs and other high-level executives of some fairly large companies.

On the last night of the trade show, one of the CEOs announced that his wife had left early and that the group of executives was going to go to the local strip club. He proceeded to look at each of us and tell us we were to be there.

It was my first experience with such a situation, but I instinctively recoiled and said “NO” quite loudly. Everyone turned to look at me, and the CEO asked “why not?”

I was out of my element, in Hong Kong, surrounded by millions of dollars (literally) in jewels, rich executives, and the like, but there was one thought that popped into my mind that I blurted out as quickly as it came in.

“Because my mother would never let me,” I replied.

Yep, I said it was because my mother would never let me. Of course, there were many other reasons why I wouldn’t go, but that one was at the front of my mind, and that is what I said to this group of executives.

Abraham Lincoln said “All that I am or hope to be I owe to my angel mother.” George Washington said “All I am I owe to my mother.” They weren’t kidding. They knew who had shaped them.

Moms are the force that shape and mold so much of our world, as they mold us. Every human on this planet is here because of a mother. I don’t know that we can ever fully appreciate the influence of a good mother in our world, but that day in Hong Kong, I realized how profound of an impact my mother had on shaping me.

The CEO asked me if I had any better ideas of something to do instead of the strip club. I had no idea what to do in Hong Kong, but one of our family treats popped into my mind.

“We can get ice cream,” I responded.

“In Hong Kong? Where do we find ice cream in Hong Kong?”

An image of a McDonalds popped into my mind. It was a few blocks from the location we were at. I suggested McDonalds, and that night a group of executives walked down the street in Hong Kong to eat ice cream at McDonalds.

That all happened because of my mother and her influence on me and my life. She changed the course of that night for many people.

I am certain that moms do the same the world over. A mother’s influence impacts more than just her children, it impacts all whom her children associate with. While the work of a mother is often unappreciated, uncelebrated, and unrecognized, it is a powerful force in shaping our world and those in it, for good.

I’m grateful to have felt the pull to fiercely embrace motherhood, and been astounded at the influence of women adding their waves of goodness and passion to influence children who will determine the future of our civilization. I am honored to personally know the mothers quoted and described here and countless others from all walks of life and cultures. Truly, mothers are a powerful influence.

Madres: Una Influencia Poderosa

Al celebrar una década de la influencia de Big Ocean Women y nuestra misión de defender la fe, la familia y la maternidad, las siguientes ideas y palabras me llegaron al corazón:

Además, mi corazón recordó la profunda influencia de mi madre resumida en mi artículo de 2017. Recientemente, leí una publicación en redes sociales celebrando la influencia de una mamá que conozco y que amo. Ella y su esposo tienen una familia numerosa que ha sido amada, nutrida e influenciada por su ejemplo. Su hijo Austin Hepworth ha escrito varios artículos sobre la influencia que sus padres han tenido en él. Hubo uno que me conmovió profundamente y que ciertamente define la poderosa influencia de su madre, y todas las demás mujeres en el mundo que nutren y enseñan a la nueva generación.

Fui a Hong Kong cuando tenía 21 para traducir en una feria internacional de gemas, relojes y joyería para una empresa de plata en la que trabajaba por aquel entonces. Estuve allí, siendo un “niño” de 21 años, traduciendo para algunos directores ejecutivos y otros altos gerentes de empresas bastante grandes. La última noche de la feria, uno de los directores anunció que su esposa se había marchado temprano y que el grupo de ejecutivos iría al club de striptease local. Nos miró a cada uno y nos dijo que necesitábamos ir.

Fue mi primera vez en una situación como esa, pero instintivamente retrocedí y dije “NO” en voz alta. Todos voltearon a verme y el director preguntó “¿por qué no?”

Me encontraba fuera de mi elemento, en Hong Kong, rodeado de millones de dólares (literalmente) en joyas, ejecutivos ricos y cosas por el estilo, pero hubo un pensamiento que me pasó por la mente y lo dije tan rápido como apareció.

“Porque mi mamá jamás me dejaría,” contesté. Sí, dije que mi mamá jamás me dejaría.

Por su puesto que había otras razones por las cuales no iría, pero esa estaba en mi mente y eso fue lo que le dije al grupo de ejecutivos. Abraham Lincoln dijo "Todo lo que soy o espero ser, se lo debo a mi madre que es un ángel." George Washington también dijo "Todo lo que soy se lo debo a mi madre." No estaban bromeando. Ellos sabían quien los había formado.

Las mamás son la fuerza que da forma y moldea gran parte de nuestro mundo, así como nos moldean a nosotros mismos. Cada ser humano en este planeta está aquí gracias a una madre. No sé si alguna vez podremos apreciar plenamente la influencia de una buena madre en nuestro mundo, pero ese día en Hong Kong, me di cuenta del profundo impacto que mi madre tuvo en mi formación.

El director me preguntó si tenía una mejor idea sobre que hacer en lugar de ir a un club. No tenía ni idea de que hacer en Hong Kong, pero una tradición familiar se me vino a la mente. “Podemos ir por helado,” contesté. “¿En Hong Kong? ¿Dónde encontramos helado en Hong Kong?” Una imagen de McDonalds se me vino a la mente. Estaba a unas cuantas cuadras de donde estábamos. Sugerí ir a McDonalds, y esa noche un grupo de ejecutivos caminaron en una calle de Hong Kong rumbo a comer helado en el McDonalds.

Todo eso pasó gracias a mi madre y a su influencia en mi vida. Ella cambió el rumbo de esa noche para mucha gente. Estoy seguro de que las madres hacen lo mismo en todo el mundo. La influencia de una madre impacta no solo a sus hijos, sino a todos aquellos con quienes se relacionan. Si bien la labor de una madre a menudo no se aprecia, se celebra ni se reconoce, es una fuerza poderosa que moldea nuestro mundo y a quienes lo habitan, para bien. Estoy agradecida por haber sentido el gran deseo de abrazar con fervor la maternidad y haberme asombrado por la influencia de las mujeres que, con su bondad y pasión, influyen en los niños que determinarán el futuro de nuestra civilización. Me honra conocer personalmente a las madres citadas y descritas aquí, y a innumerables otras de todos los ámbitos y culturas. Sin duda, las madres son una influencia poderosa.
