An Abundance of Opportunites

November 30, 2023

There is a song* that comes to my mind frequently with lyrics that sometimes inspire me and sometimes chastise me:

There are chances for work all around just now,

Opportunities right in our way.

Do not let them pass by, saying, “Sometime I’ll try,”

But go and do something today.

Every day we have an abundance of opportunities to choose what we will do with the time we have. We could look at the limited 24 hours with the perspective of having too much to get done with so little time. I feel myself falling into this all too often. If I choose to be thoughtful and deliberate, however, I find that I am able to accomplish more than I thought I could.

Beyond working through our daily tasks, and without adding another item to our lists of things that must get done, we always have the opportunity to grow in our outlook and attitude. It is a simple thing to add working with an increased awareness of those around us, to be thoughtful and helpful in places we already are and tasks we are already doing, to even just share more smiles and kind words with people around us.

There is power in choosing to focus outward instead of on ourselves. There is power in choosing to lift where we are standing rather than lamenting that we are not in a better position. We do not live in isolation. We each interact with people everyday. When we are caring for children, we have the capacity to build in them character and identity, purpose and strength. When we work with customers or coworkers, we have the opportunity to share goodness, light, and encouragement. When we care for our homes, we have the capacity to create beauty and order in the chaos. When we lead, we have the occasion to inspire and serve.

It is also important to look inward at times and consider where we could improve. Is there an opportunity for more education that would help my situation or that would allow me to serve better? Is there a skill that I could learn that would be beneficial? Is there something that I want to learn about that would help make life better for myself and those around me? Sometimes all it takes is a question and a brave step.

“There are chances for work all around just now,” if we only look to see them. Is there an issue in your community that you can help with? Is there an organization that would benefit from the gift of your time? Is there something you are passionate about that you want to help with? If there isn’t already an organization that you can align yourself with to do that work, then don’t be afraid to start! Join or start a WAVE in your community and work with women in your community to help solve the problems you see. Do you have talents that could be of benefit to others? Do you have gifts that you can share? Sometimes we feel small and insignificant; sometimes we tell ourselves that we’re not good enough or what we have to offer doesn’t matter, but it does. It absolutely does. Every little candle drives out darkness. Every brushstroke adds to the painting. Every drop of water builds the ocean.

Each new day is full of opportunities to learn and grow, to give and serve. As we trust in God to guide us and listen to our internal compass, we can know what opportunities are best worth pursuing. We can see where our energy is best spent, and choose to focus on what really matters.

The chorus to that song ends with this promise, which I have found to be true in my life:

Doing good is a pleasure, a joy beyond measure,

A blessing of duty and love.
