We Are Our Own Expert (English & Spanish)

“What would you do in my situation?” As an attorney, this is a question I commonly get from clients. The law is complex, and it can often be difficult to decide a course of action as each potential path may have pros and cons. 

However, I also have clients that never ask that question. They ask about what the law is or what it requires, and then they take time to consider and make their own decisions. This type of client is generally quite successful, and when faced with adversity, loss, or hardship, they tend to get through it and still do well after.

There are many studies that attempt to identify what traits, talents, or gifts may help a person be successful. While I have not conducted my own scientific study, my experience watching people navigate legal issues has helped me see at least one factor that contributes to success – that of a person’s level of willingness to seek after and obtain good information.

I often hear calls to “listen to the experts”. To me, this call means “forego your responsibility to decide for yourself, and follow someone else that knows very little about you.” As children of God, He gave us the ability to think and reason, and He gave us the responsibility to make decisions for ourselves.

We act responsibly when we take the initiative to learn and to seek after knowledge. Experts have a place. We go to them to learn complex details or things that take years of research or studying to understand. However, no expert can make the decision about what, ultimately, is right for us or our situation. We must take the knowledge we have gained and apply it to our own situation.

For example, I met with a mother who had been in a long and ugly divorce battle. She was out of money and options, and it looked like she might lose custody of her children. She was heartbroken at that prospect. The court docket itself was over 100 pages long, as her ex was an attorney and had made sure to utilize every tool possible in the divorce.

As we talked, I knew that there was not a lot of hope from a legal perspective, based on how everything had gone to that point. I asked her what her strengths were, and if she had tried to utilize any of those during the period of this legal battle.

Ultimately, we concluded the discussion with a few things for her to think about. She took the responsibility to consider the information, and then she realized what she could do. She accepted that God had given her a gift to be a peacemaker, and she sent one communication to her ex that came from her strength of peace. Everything quickly changed, and suddenly the legal situation and custody situation changed too.

There is no expert that could have told her what to do in that situation, but, after she sought for good information, she was able to make a powerful decision that changed things completely.

We are the same. When we seek good information and work to obtain knowledge, our decisions become more powerful if we accept the responsibility to make them based on what is best for us.

Knowledge brings power, and I fully believe, based on my years as an attorney, that the desire and willingness to seek after and obtain knowledge is one of the factors that determines success in our lives. Knowledge unlocks doors, opens our minds, and helps us see paths that otherwise would remain hidden to us.

Si bien no he realizado un estudio científico propio, mi experiencia observando a personas que abordan cuestiones legales me ha ayudado a identificar al menos un factor que contribuye al éxito: la disposición de una persona a buscar y obtener buena información.

A menudo oigo invitaciones a “escuchar a los expertos”. Para mí, esta invitación significa “renunciar a la responsabilidad de decidir por uno mismo y seguir a alguien que sabe muy poco de uno”. Como hijos de Dios, Él nos dio la capacidad de pensar y razonar, y la responsabilidad de tomar decisiones por nosotros mismos.

Actuamos con responsabilidad cuando tomamos la iniciativa de aprender y buscar el conocimiento. Los expertos tienen un lugar. Acudimos a ellos para aprender detalles complejos o cosas que requieren años de investigación o estudio para comprender. Sin embargo, ningún experto puede decidir qué es lo correcto para nosotros o nuestra situación. Debemos aplicar el conocimiento adquirido a nuestra propia situación.

Por ejemplo, conocí a una madre que había estado en una larga y ardua batalla legal por su divorcio. No tenía dinero ni opciones, y parecía que podría perder la custodia de sus hijos. Estaba destrozada ante esa perspectiva. El expediente judicial tenía más de 100 páginas, ya que su ex era abogado y se había asegurado de utilizar todos los recursos posibles en el divorcio.

Mientras hablábamos, supe que no había muchas esperanzas desde el punto de vista legal, dado cómo había ido todo hasta ese momento. Le pregunté cuáles eran sus fortalezas y si había intentado utilizar alguna de ellas durante la batalla legal.

Finalmente, concluimos la conversación con algunas cosas para que reflexionara. Asumió la responsabilidad de considerar la información y entonces se dio cuenta de lo que podía hacer. Aceptó que Dios le había dado el don de ser pacificadora y le envió una carta a su ex, un llamado a la paz. Todo cambió rápidamente y de repente la situación legal y la de la custodia también cambiaron.

Ningún experto podría haberle dicho qué hacer en esa situación, pero tras buscar buena información, pudo tomar una decisión contundente que cambió las cosas por completo.

Somos iguales. Cuando buscamos buena información y nos esforzamos por obtener conocimiento, nuestras decisiones cobran mayor poder si aceptamos la responsabilidad de tomarlas basándonos en lo que es mejor para nosotros.

El conocimiento trae poder y creo firmemente, basándome en mis años como abogado, que el deseo y la disposición de buscar y obtener conocimiento es uno de los factores que determinan el éxito en nuestras vidas. El conocimiento abre puertas, nos abre la mente y nos ayuda a ver caminos que de otro modo permanecerían ocultos.
