Hand-Me-Down Endowments of Wisdom (English & Spanish)

The word endowment is tied to learning and wisdom in several ways. An endowment is a gift. It might be money given to an institution such as a college. Or an endowment could be the natural abilities of students, such as physical attributes or talents, that enhance the likelihood of success in their future. Additionally, insurance policies and savings programs, called education endowments, allow parents to create a nest egg with small regular deposits to provide for their children’s post-high school education or training.

This word tickled my mind because most of the schools here in the United States welcomed students back to school recently. Many children received new clothes for their return to the classroom. Others may have received an endowment, or gift, of clothes from older siblings, relatives, organizations, or friends. We used to refer to these clothes as hand-me-downs. I did not welcome the idea of wearing them until I was fortunate to have a cousin whose hand-me-downs were nicer than any clothes I owned. They were given with love and compassion. I still remember a navy blue dress from her I wore for my school picture. It was my favorite.

Many families provided the returning students with backpacks filled with required school supplies–pencils, crayons, notebooks, etc. One thoughtful mother bought two sets of the required items for her daughter, encouraging her to share them with someone who could use the extras. This gift was two-fold: a blessing for a student who needed the supplies, and a lasting endowment for her daughter who started the new year with some hand-me-down wisdom on how to share and be aware of others’ needs. 

This gift of hand-me-down wisdom is also key in the skills and work ethic children gain from the tutelage and example of family members. Though not as visible as school supplies or clothes, they are ever-present and more enduring and valuable. I remember school friends who knew how to tie a beautiful bow on the back of our dresses, others who instinctively kept their desks and lockers tidy, those who were punctual and reliable in completing assigned homework, and especially those who treated each classmate as a person of worth and interest. These endowments influenced and changed me. 

Besides being powerful, these hand-me-down gifts don’t require wealth, higher education, or notoriety to provide needed sustenance for children who grow up surrounded by them. I love seeing my children and their spouses reappearing and reimagined in our grandchildren with the endowments of their parents shining through–hard work, sacrifice for others, attention to detail, nurturing children, respect for life, curiosity, honoring Christian values, and simply loving the opportunity to be part of their family and the family of God. 

These nuggets of hand-me-down wisdom may seem trivial or unimportant at first glance, but as with endowment education accounts, they grow slowly and naturally until they are part of the fiber of those within our circles of influence. So, keep quietly doing good and being good. There is no end to the power of your influence on those who are blessed to know you and receive the gift of your personal hand-me-down attributes of wisdom. They are such a remarkable endowment for all, but especially for the rising generation.

El término “dotación” se relaciona con el aprendizaje y la sabiduría de varias maneras. Una dotación es un regalo. Puede ser dinero otorgado a una institución como una universidad. O puede ser las habilidades naturales de los estudiantes, como atributos físicos o talentos, que aumentan sus probabilidades de éxito en el futuro. Además, las pólizas de seguro y los programas de ahorro, llamados “dotaciones educativas”, permiten a los padres crear un fondo de ahorro con pequeños depósitos regulares para financiar la educación o formación posterior a la secundaria de sus hijos.

Esta palabra me hizo gracia porque la mayoría de las escuelas aquí en Estados Unidos dieron la bienvenida a los estudiantes recientemente. Muchos niños recibieron ropa nueva para su regreso a las aulas. Otros quizás recibieron una dotación, o regalo, de ropa de hermanos mayores, familiares, organizaciones o amigos. Solíamos referirnos a esta ropa como ropa usada. No me gustaba la idea de usarla hasta que tuve la suerte de tener una prima cuya ropa usada era mejor que cualquier ropa que yo tuviera. Me la dieron con amor y compasión. Todavía recuerdo un vestido azul marino que usé para mi foto escolar. Era mi favorito.

Muchas familias proporcionaron a los estudiantes mochilas llenas de útiles escolares: lápices, crayones, cuadernos, etc. Una madre muy considerada compró dos juegos de los artículos necesarios para su hija, animándola a compartirlos con alguien que pudiera necesitar los extras. Este regalo tuvo dos caras: una bendición para una estudiante que necesitaba los útiles y una herencia duradera para su hija, quien comenzó el nuevo año con la sabiduría de la generación anterior sobre cómo compartir y estar atenta a las necesidades de los demás.

Este don de sabiduría heredada también es clave en las habilidades y la ética laboral que los niños adquieren gracias a la tutela y el ejemplo de sus familiares. Aunque no son tan visibles como los útiles escolares o la ropa, son omnipresentes y más perdurables y valiosos. Recuerdo a los amigos del colegio que sabían cómo atar un bonito lazo en la espalda de nuestros vestidos, a otros que instintivamente mantenían sus escritorios y casilleros ordenados, a los que eran puntuales y responsables al completar las tareas asignadas, y especialmente a los que trataban a cada compañero como una persona valiosa e interesante. Estas cualidades me influyeron y me cambiaron.

Además de ser poderosos, estos dones heredados no requieren riqueza, educación superior ni notoriedad para brindar el sustento necesario a los niños que crecen rodeados de ellos. Me encanta ver a mis hijos y a sus cónyuges reaparecer y reinventarse en nuestros nietos, con las dotes de sus padres brillando a través de ellos: trabajo duro, sacrificio por los demás, atención al detalle, crianza de los hijos, respeto por la vida, curiosidad, honrar los valores cristianos y simplemente amar la oportunidad de ser parte de su familia y de la familia de Dios.

Estas pequeñas joyas de sabiduría heredada pueden parecer triviales o sin importancia a primera vista, pero al igual que las cuentas educativas, crecen lenta y naturalmente hasta formar parte del tejido de quienes están dentro de nuestros círculos mas cercanos. Así que, sigan haciendo el bien y sigan siendo buenos en silencio. El poder de su influencia sobre quienes tienen la bendición de conocerlos y recibir el don de sus atributos personales de sabiduría, heredados de sus antepasados, es inagotable. Son un don extraordinario para todos, pero especialmente para la nueva generación.
